In the time of George III renowned Italian engraver Benedetto Pistrucci, recently arrived in London, was commissioned to produce designs for the new Gold and Silver coinage. His rousing St George and the dragon design first appeared on coins in 1817. His work is so stirring, timeless and perfect that it has been used on The Sovereign so frequently since, becoming recognized and esteemed the world over.

Pistrucci's St George evidently appealed to Pole, who agreed that the patron saint of England would prove an excellent and distinctive reverse for the new Gold coinage.
